Millions on alert as super typhoon hits Philippines
Millions of people in the Philippines were on high alert Wednesday as one of the strongest typhoons ever hit the disaster-battered country with authorities warning of giant storm surges and destructive winds. Super Typhoon Haima hit the northern province of Cagayan at about 11 pm (1500 GMT) Wednesday, bringing strong winds and heavy rains almost on a par with catastrophic Super Typhoon Haiyan which claimed more than 7,350 lives in 2013. "We only pray we be spared the destruction such as the previous times, which brought agony and suffering," President Rodrigo Duterte said in Beijing, where he is currently on a four-day visit.AFP This Commodity Could Be Worth 5X More Than Gold

Our Latest Look at China's New Stealth Fighter
China's latest fighter, the Chengdu J-20, is sporting a new camouflage scheme. The new "fifth generation" fighter is wearing new "splinter" camouflage in photos spotted on the Chinese internet in early October. The photos show four aircraft: Two wearing a yellow primer paint coating, one in plain gray, and a fourth in the aforementioned splinter camouflage. According to Combat Aircraft, the planes were photographed over the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group factory in Chengdu, Sichuan province. Chinese internet sources state that two J-20s were sent to Guangdong province in eastern China, possibly to participate in the annual Zhuhai Air Show which is scheduled for November 1-6. How to survive a nuclear World War III
Turkey has this morning warned the conflict in Syria will be the flashpoint for World War III as global superpowers back opposing sides. “If this proxy war continues, after this, let me be clear, America and Russia will come to a point of war,” Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus told Anadolu news agency. Doomsayers have been predicting an all-out nuclear war since the Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima in August 1945. While the two giants became locked in the Cold War, seven other countries became nuclear: Britain, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea. According to the Federation of American scientists, there are 15,350 nuclear warheads in the world in 2016, moreNew York Post - World
Report proposes canceling U.S. aircraft carriers, investing in lasers to combat Russia and China
The U.S. military is at an inflection point. Unable to remove itself completely from two protracted wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Pentagon has been forced to respond to a resurgent Russia and a rising China, while remaining ready to combat myriad terrorist threats around the world. The Pentagon’s $582.7 billion 2017 budget has attempted to put in place an architecture for these new challenges, but, according to a group of experts from the Center for New American Security, a Washington-based think tank, the Pentagon will have to make some hard decisions if it wants to effectively combat the threats of the future. Scientists Accidentally Discover Efficient Process to Turn CO2 Into Ethanol
Scientists at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee have discovered a chemical reaction to turn CO2 into ethanol, potentially creating a new technology to help avert climate change. Their findings were published in the journal ChemistrySelect. The researchers were attempting to find a series of chemical reactions that could turn CO2 into a useful fuel, when they realized the first step in their process managed to do it all by itself. The reaction turns CO2 into ethanol, which could in turn be used to power generators and vehicles. The tech involves a new combination of copper and carbon arranged into nanospikes on a silicon surface. The nanotechnology allows the reactions to be veryPopular Mechanics - Science
There is nothing we can do to stop an asteroid apocalypse
Earth’s defense systems against giant space rocks are woefully inadequate, leaving the planet dangerously exposed, a leading expert has warned. Colossal asteroids and meteors hurtling through our solar system could hit the planet at any time. Earth is regularly hit by smaller space rocks. In fact, roughly 100,000 pounds of material falls on our planet every day, NASA estimates. But many of the galactic projectiles are big enough to level cities or even potentially destroy all life on the planet. And the warning systems currently in place to detect approaching asteroids are insufficient to tackle the looming threat. This means asteroids can potentially “sneak up” - smashing into the planet withoutNew York PostYou may also like

Activity detected at North Korea's satellite launch pad
SEOUL, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- North Korea continues to engage in low levels of activity at the Sohae Satellite Launching Station, where Pyongyang launched an earth-observation satellite in February. Writing for 38 North, a Johns Hopkins University website dedicated to North Korea issues, analyst Joseph S. Bermudez, Jr., stated satellite imagery from Oct. 8 shows some activity but not the kind of movement that is typically seen before a launch. The new activity could mean North Korea is concentrating on maintenance at the site or "infrastructure improvements." But "it remains unclear whether activity at the vertical engine test stand is related to an impending engine test or serves some other purpose,"UPI - World
Duterte's Deference Delights China But Is Questioned At Home
BEIJING - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's effusive message of friendship on his visit to Beijing this week has handed China a public relations bonanza just three months after Beijing suffered a humiliating defeat at an international tribunal. The state-owned Chinese media that sought to portray Duterte's predecessor and the arbitration panel as American puppets this summer have now rolled out what Chinese media scholars describe as a rare welcome for the Philippine president, who this week downplayed his country's dispute with Beijing over South China Sea territory. But the overtures have drawn criticism of Duterte at home in the Philippines, where the public is wary of taking a deferentialFox NewsYou may also like

Space is full of gigantic holes that are bigger than we expected
Face it, the vast darkness of space is a little eerie. It’s no wonder we usually prefer to focus on the bright spots. But it’s in the void that we might find our best explanations of the cosmos. In 1923, Edwin Hubble showed that the universe was far larger than expected by discovering that what we thought were swirls of gas on the edge of our own galaxy were actually galaxies in their own right: lonely “island universes” we could spot across an empty sea of black. That led to a comforting thought - we now know that even the darkest patch of sky, when seen through the telescope named after Hubble, is dotted with clumps of luminous stuff like our Milky Way. But there’s another view of the universe,New Scientist - World
Iran-Backed Yemen Fires on U.S. Navy
Twice last week-and possibly a third time-U.S. Navy ships on patrol in the Gulf of Aden were attacked by sophisticated cruise missiles. The American warships were not hit, but they did have to fire SM-2 and Sea Sparrow defensive missiles and use Nulka anti-ship missile decoy countermeasures to disable the incoming weapons. The Houthi attack utilized cruise missiles-variants of Silkworm missiles, weapons Iranians are known to use. In response, the U.S. ships destroyed three radar stations along the Red Sea Coast in Yemen. The radar sites helped guide the missiles, and they too were operated by Iranians. More Countries Weigh Mini-Missile for Special Operators
More countries are considering buying Raytheon Co.’s mini-missile for special operators and infantry forces, a company official said. Since Raytheon unveiled the Pike missile in 2015, the Waltham, Massachusetts-based company has received permission to market the precision-guided munition from one to several foreign governments, according to Lorenzo Cortes, a spokesman for Raytheon. The projectile has a range of about 2 kilometers and is designed to be fired from existing rocket-propelled grenade launchers such as the M203 and ELGM, though an M203 launcher beneath an M4 rifle must be modified to swing out far enough to accept the round. The Pike is designed to be used in situations where a .50-caliber machine gun or rocket-propelled grenade aren’t effective against an enemy.DoD Buzz - U.S.

The Pentagon’s massive new telescope is designed to track space junk and watch out for killer asteroids
There are a lot of rocks flying around through space. Lots of debris, too. Old satellites, spent rocket boosters, even for a short while a spatula that got loose during a space shuttle mission in 2006. All of it swirling around in orbit, creating a bit of a traffic jam. For years, the Pentagon has been worried about the collisions that might be caused by an estimated 500,000 pieces of debris, taking out enormously valuable satellites and, in turn, creating even more debris. On Tuesday, the Defense Department took another significant step toward monitoring all of the cosmic junk swirling around in space, by delivering a gigantic new telescope capable of seeing small objects from very far away.Washington Post - Politics
Japan coast guard says Chinese vessels seen near Senkaku Islands
TOKYO, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Japan's coast guard said Chinese vessels trespassed into territorial waters for the 30th time in 2016. Tokyo stated four Chinese coast guard ships approached the disputed Senkaku Islands on Tuesday between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., near the islands of Uotsuri and Kuba. The boats were seen again at around 10 a.m. near the island of Minako, where they lingered for about an hour-and-a-half, according to Tokyo. Japan's coast guard is monitoring the seas in response to the presence of the boats near the islands that are also claimed by China and Taiwan. Japan's foreign ministry protested the latest movements, and told Chinese diplomats in Tokyo that the Senkaku Islands are JapaneseUPI - Health
